"You become the five people you spend most of your time with.”
“Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.”
Blah, blah, blah. We’ve heard it all before, right?.
But actually, not blah, blah, blah - because I’m going to write a piece on it and it’s going to be really good. So keep reading.
What I once thought was just a series of cliches of being aware of who you surround yourself with, I know understand to be potentially one of the most important learnings I’ve had all year. This cliche-type just playing out in real time right before my eyes.
Let me walk you through it.
As I sat at my desk on an early Tuesday morning, ready to dive into the day, I looked down at my phone and saw that a friend of mine had posted a new blog.
“Ugh, she’s so consistent. Why can’t I be that consistent with my writing?” was my first thought (a classic case of projecting insecurities…Sorry girl, love you).
I opened my computer and pulled open the blog - it was, unsurprisingly, incredible. My friend is a phenomenal writer - she’s conversational and relatable. I can hear her voice as I’m reading the piece and am laughing at some point or another as she shares her comedic relief throughout. (cally’s corner on Substack - please go read and you’ll see what an actual good blog sounds like)
As I finish the piece, I’m immediately hit by a spark of creativity.
I sit down and spend 20 minutes getting words on a page (my piece ‘Is there an adult around?’ is out now).
After finishing this first, and very poor, draft and sitting with the sense of accomplishment and excited energy that often comes when I create something, I realize how these friendship cliches are so incredibly true… If my friend didn’t share her blog in the first place, I wouldn’t have written anything today. Before reading her blog, I had intention of writing, no sense of urgency, no calling, no huge urge to put words to paper, no strong ideas coming to mind.
I now feel called to share this eye-opening moment, because wow did it feel like the light bulb went on - surrounding yourself with the right people, specifically creative people, is essential. It’s the difference between doing or not doing. Writing or not writing. Creating or not creating.
Sometimes you just need to see someone doing it to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, put your head down, and do the work.
Shoutout to my amazing friends today, most specifically - Cally’s Corner <3
Omg AB 😭😭😭 love you that’s all so kind and right back at you. Can’t wait to read the piece ❤️ keep going
